Abstract
To define the clinical characteristics of pain in painful diabetic neuropathic patients, we evaluated the pain relating factors using Medical College of Wisconisn Noncer Pain Questionnaire in 35 diabetic neuropathic patients who referred to
neuropsychiatric department for controlling the pain.
@ES The results were as follows ;p
@EN 1. Mean age of subject was 58.84¡¾8.4 years, mean duration of diabetes was 112.74.5¡¾months, and mean duration of pain was 16.5¡¾16.0 months.
2. Symmetrical distal part of low extremities involvement including ankle and foot was most common, and upper extremities involvement was also quite common.
3. Mean score of pain at its worst was 6.5¡¾2.3, and at its least severe was 9.2¡¾2.0. As each mean score of pain at its usually is and at the present time were 4.1¡¾1.7, those were not so severe.
4. Sharp pain was the most frequent description and the next order in frequency was burning, and the next order in frequency was burning, aching and shooting.
5. Persistent patterns of pain were variable, but constant and unremitting pain, and remitting with a few hour free interval were equally frequent.
6. At bedtime was the most frequent time of day that pain was worst, lying down was most frequent aggrevating event of pain, and walking was most frequent relieving event of pain.
7. Interruption of sleep by pain was noticed in only 13 patients.
8. As mean of the total score of BDI was 8.4¡¾11.6, degree of depression was relatively mild. Correlation between severity of pain and degree of depresion was not significant.
9. Duration of diabetes was not correlated with severity of pain, and degree of depression. Duration of pain was not correlated with severity of pain and degree of depression also. But duration of pain had a significant positive correlation with
mean
score of unworthless-self debasement subscale of BDI (p<0.05).
